„EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS

Germany has been officially recognized as free from terrestrial rabies (rabies in ground-dwelling animals) since 2008. In 2021, rabies was detected in a dog that was illegally brought to Germany from a non-EU country. In 2024 the freedom was reconfirmed after an updated self-declaration was sent to WOAH.

The dog, which contracted rabies and died on 25.01.2026, was legally brought to Germany from a non-EU country. According to the accompanying documents, the dog was almost 8 months old, had been chipped and vaccinated against rabies.

The available rabies test confirmed the effectiveness of the vaccination. However, the examination of the animal after it died revealed that the animal was younger than stated when it entered the EU. This means, the import requirements were not met and the import was illegal.“ (Quelle: WAHIS)
